Our World is being severly-affected by climate change brought about through a massive build-up of carbon dioxide largely through the burning of fossil fuels and the destruction of trees.
The World usually balances its carbon dioxide levels through the trees which absorb this and emit oxygen however de-aforestation has severly-impeded its ability to do so. Palm-oil farming, especially in Indonesia, Borneo and Sumatra, is heavily contributing to the destruction of the last of the World’s rainforests. The forest is clearfelled and burned to plant palm-oil trees which provide a quick plentiful cash crop which is used in all manner of goods from icecream, cakes, biscuits, pies, soaps, shampoos, cosmetics, breads and chocolates to hundreds of other commonly-consumed products.
One of the saddest ramifications of palm-oil farming is the near-extinction of the orangutan – a species which shares 90% of its DNA with human beings. Orphaned orangutans are cared for in nurseries crying for their slaughtered mothers and a World-wide campaign is growing in its efforts to save yet another of our vanishing species. Other creatures such as Tigers, birds and small mammals are also eliminated.
This campaign is reminiscent of the efforts to save the whales and the insistance of the Japanese to go on culling this highly-intelligent and vital species for food and oil in the name of ‘scientific research’. In the past whale oil formed a major component of the soap industry – the blubber was commonly turned into commercial soap. However whale consciousness has removed whale oil from modern soap. It is estimated that by 2010 the destruction of Borneo’s rainforests by palm oil farming will be total and complete.
